YAK DOWN IS ONE OF THE RAREST AND WARMEST NATURAL MATERIALS IN THE WORLD.
For most people, this is their first introduction to the fiber — and it truly changes the perception of comfort during the cold season.
Yaks are large high-altitude animals weighing up to 450 kg, living in Central Asia at elevations of 4,000–6,000 meters. In conditions of strong winds, dry air, and dramatic temperature fluctuations, their natural protection is formed — a unique undercoat.
It is the climate that determines the quality of the fiber. The harsher the conditions, the finer, denser, and warmer the down becomes. Mongolia is one of the key regions where yaks have lived alongside nomadic families for more than 5,000 years, preserving the natural balance between humans and animals.
Yak wool has a multi-layered structure: coarse outer fibers protect against wind and moisture, allowing these animals to withstand temperatures down to -40…-50°C, while the soft undercoat retains warmth. It is this fine undercoat, known locally as khullu, that is carefully hand-combed during the animals’ seasonal molting period.
At Cashmerebox, we work exclusively with 100% yak down, without using synthetic or blended fibers. This is a conscious choice that allows us to preserve the material’s natural properties — its warmth, lightness, and breathability.
We rarely dye yak down garments, preferring its natural palette instead. It is restrained and refined, featuring deep dark brown, a soft milk chocolate shade, and warm grey — the rarest color.
This approach allows us to preserve the fiber structure and highlight its natural qualities. As a result, our garments remain as authentic as possible — with natural shades, softness, and warmth gifted by nature itself.

EXCEPTIONAL WARMTH
Thanks to its dense undercoat, yak down effectively retains warmth even in severe frost. It is one of the warmest natural materials, allowing you to stay comfortable without excessive layering.
NATURAL THERMOREGULATION
The fiber breathes and adapts to body temperature. This means that yak down garments do not overheat indoors and do not create a harsh contrast when stepping outside into the cold.
SOFTNESS AND FINENESS OF THE FIBER
For our garments, we select only the finest fibers measuring 16–18 microns. This represents less than 20% of the collected raw material and allows us to create soft, elastic, and silky-to-the-touch pieces.
DURABILITY
Unlike more delicate fibers, yak down withstands daily wear better, retains its shape longer, and is less prone to pilling.
BALANCE OF LIGHTNESS AND PROTECTION
Yak down garments remain lightweight and never feel heavy, while still providing reliable protection from wind and cold. At the same time, this fiber naturally absorbs fewer odors than many other types of wool. This allows garments to stay fresh longer during everyday wear and reduces the need for frequent washing.
YAK DOWN IS A QUIET LUXURY THAT DOES NOT LOSE ITS RELEVANCE OVER TIME. WE SUPPORT CONSCIOUS CONSUMPTION AND STRIVE TO CREATE GARMENTS THAT WILL BE WORN AND LOVED FOR MANY YEARS.
